Memes, what are they? The definition of an internet meme according to Wikipedia is “an idea, style or action which spreads, often as mimicry, from person to person via the Internet, as with imitating the concept (Wikipedia).”
A meme can be considered a mimicked theme, including simple phrases or gestures. An Internet meme may take the form of an image, hyperlink, video, picture, website, or hashtag. It may be just a word or phrase, including an intentional misspelling. These small movements tend to spread from person to person via social networks, blogs, direct email, or news sources. They may relate to various existing Internet cultures or subcultures, often created or spread on sites such as 4chan, Reddit and numerous others. Fads and sensations tend to grow rapidly on the Internet, because the instant communication facilitates word-of-mouth transmission (Wikipedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_meme>).
While researching the very popular meme “I Too Like to Live Dangerously”, I came across many different memes people had created, but when searching for its origin I knew where to go. Knowyourmeme.com is a very popular meme website that explains the origins of many memes. It had a lot about the meme I Too Like to Live Dangerously, including similarities between it and other memes such as the “We’ve Got a Badass Over Here and Some Men Just Want to Watch the World Burn” <http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-too-like-to-live-dangerously>.
I Too Like to Live Dangerously was a meme taken from the 1997 comedy film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery during the blackjack scene when Austin Powers, played by Mike Myers, decides to stay when he has “five” and he says his iconic line “I Too Like to Live Dangerously”. his popular scene from the movie Austin Powers did not become an official internet meme though until November 13, 2012, when a Redditor with the username Kcazaa submitted an image titled “Every time I see people do math with a pen” to the advice subreddit, with a screen capture from this Austin powers scene. It did not take long after being placed on Reddit to take the internet by storm. On December 29, 2012 it was placed on the popular website 9gag by user Johndonohoe11, when he posted this picture. It was after this picture was posted that the meme “I Too/Also Like to Live Dangerously became comparable to the famous meme “Watch out we got a baddass over here”. The meme did not become how it is today until February 21, 2013 when Redditor AvengerAdam submitted an image joking about fast forwarding their (DVR) digital video recorder.
This meme has become very popular because of its similarity to the “Watch out we got a baddass over here” meme, as well as bringing in a little bit of nostalgia because anybody who has watched the Austin Powers movies remember scenes like this one. This meme brings falls into the remix category because of the many different variations from the original. Everybody remixes this one scene from Austin Powers to fit any situation. I believe the memes original purpose was simply to be a remix of the “Watch out we got a baddass over here” meme because its first posts were all very similar to that meme. It then followed another meme before becoming the famous meme it is today. It was similar to the “Some men just want to watch the world burn” meme because the caption for the meme would be something similar to that meme. Such as in this image . The meme “I too like to live dangerously” has a very simple argument that most people understand immediately. Its argument is to take something that may or may not be dangerous, but is commonly done by people, and make it seem like a “badass” thing to do.
According to Eduardo Navas, the purpose of a remix is either regressive, reflexive, or regenerative. Generally regressive remixes are emotional, reflexive are the remixes that make arguments, and regenerative remixes are mainly utilitarian. I believe that the meme “I too like to live dangerously” has the potential of being all three types of remixes because of how it has changed over the years, and how easily it can be altered to fit into any situation. I believe that comparably this meme does not have very much value, because it is still very similar to other memes, and popular memes are being made constantly. Memes like this appear very frequently, and this one will soon be replaced, but may resurface on 4chan, Reddit, or 9gag one day. I enjoy when people bring back older memes that aren’t used as commonly anymore because they all have nostalgia value. Overall memes are a cultural tool, which people use very commonly to express themselves, and they will continue to be used. I believe that memes are very good at helping people express themselves online, and I am glad that they strive so well.
